Zomato Invites You at Its Social Restaurant in New Zealand

An India-based online restaurant and nightlife guide Zomato said Sunday it has launched its operations in New Zealand, with sections for Auckland and Wellington.

Covering over 4,500 restaurants across the two cities, Zomato is now available on the web and on free mobile apps (Android, iOS, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry), says the company.

Zomato is not alone in this online chase that targets eaters of different shapes and sizes.

OpenTable (NASDAQ: OPEN), a leading provider of online restaurant reservations, has introduced its new Facebook app, “Places I’ve Eaten.”

The app allows people to share their dining history, favorite restaurants and wish lists with friends on Facebook. (Read: OpenTable Delivers “Places I’ve Eaten” Facebook App)

Moreover, online local commerce company Groupon (NASDAQ: GRPN) has announced Groupon Reserve. It is stated to be a premiere destination for items to eat, see, do, and buy.

Debuting on Reserve is Savored.com’s reservations engine that lets customers book tables at some of the best restaurants in their city at discounts of up to 40 percent. (Read: How to Reserve Restaurant Tables at Discounted Rates)

Positioned as a vertical social network, Zomato provides data on restaurants in the form of scanned menus, photos, mapped coordinates, and user reviews.

On mobile, Zomato’s app is stated to be location-aware and suggests the best restaurants around a user’s physical location. All of Zomato’s web features are available and fully supported on the mobile app, according to the company.

“We’ve been expanding our geographical footprint aggressively over the past few months, and New Zealand is an important market for us,” said Pankaj Chaddah, co-founder and COO, Zomato.

Based in New Delhi, India, Zomato says it is currently present in 8 countries: India, UAE, UK, the Philippines, Qatar, Sri Lanka, South Africa and New Zealand.
