In a significant move to scale its conversational advertising program, OpenAI announced on May 7, 2026, that it is expanding its ChatGPT ads pilot to five new major markets: the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. This follows an earlier international expansion in March that brought the pilot to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Originally launched in the United States on February 9, 2026, the program is designed to support broader access to powerful AI features by funding the significant infrastructure required for the Free and Go subscription tiers. OpenAI reported that early results have been encouraging, showing no impact on consumer trust metrics and low dismissal rates for the advertisements.
Preserving the Core User Experience
A central tenet of the program is that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. According to the sources, responses remain independent and unbiased, optimized solely for helpfulness rather than advertiser interests. When an ad appears, it is clearly labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the organic chat response.
The advertising model utilizes “Mission Alignment,” where ads provide a revenue stream to keep free and low-cost options fast and reliable. For users who prefer an ad-free experience, OpenAI offers the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers, which remain completely free of advertising. Additionally, users on the Free tier can choose to opt out of ads in exchange for fewer daily messages.

Strict Privacy and Safety Guardrails
OpenAI has implemented several protections to maintain consumer trust:
- Conversation Privacy: Advertisers never have access to personal details, chat histories, or memories. They only receive aggregated performance data, such as total views or clicks.
- Ad Targeting: Ads are matched to users based on the topic of the current conversation, past chats, and past interactions with ads.
- Safety Restrictions: The system will not show ads to users predicted to be under the age of 18. Furthermore, ads are prohibited from appearing near sensitive or regulated topics, including health, mental health, and politics.
User Choice and Control
The pilot provides users with granular control over their advertising experience. Through a dedicated settings interface, users can dismiss ads, share feedback, and delete their ad data with a single tap. A “Ads History” feature also allows users to review which brands they have seen and manage ad personalization preferences at any time.
Looking ahead, OpenAI intends to continue evolving the program by exploring new formats and buying models for businesses. The company maintains that conversational interfaces offer a unique opportunity for ads to be more relevant and useful, connecting people to products that fit naturally into their decision-making processes. Organizations interested in participating in the new markets are encouraged to sign up through OpenAI’s dedicated advertiser portal.
