In a strategic effort to scale its conversational advertising program, OpenAI announced the expansion of its ChatGPT ads pilot to five additional major markets: the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. This move, confirmed as fully launched as of August 11, 2026, follows a phased international rollout that included Canada, Australia, and New Zealand earlier in the year.
Originally launched in the United States on February 9, 2026, the advertising initiative is designed to support broader access to advanced AI features. By generating a sustainable revenue stream, OpenAI aims to fund the significant infrastructure required to keep the Free and Go subscription tiers fast and reliable for a global audience.
Preserving the Core User Experience: OpenAI has maintained a strict “Mission Alignment” model to ensure that the integration of advertisements does not degrade the core utility of the platform. A central tenet of this program is that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers; responses remain unbiased and are optimized solely for helpfulness. All sponsored content is clearly labeled and visually separated from organic chat responses.
For users seeking an uninterrupted experience, OpenAI continues to offer several ad-free tiers, including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education. Additionally, users on the Free tier who prefer not to see ads have the option to opt out in exchange for fewer daily messages.
Strict Privacy and Safety Guardrails: To maintain consumer trust, OpenAI has implemented rigorous protections regarding data and safety:
- Conversation Privacy: Advertisers are restricted from accessing personal details, chat histories, or memories, receiving only aggregated performance data like clicks or views.
- Targeting: Ad matching is based on the topic of the current conversation, past interactions with ads, and previous chats.
- Safety Restrictions: The system is designed to block ads for users predicted to be under the age of 18. Furthermore, ads are prohibited from appearing near sensitive topics such as politics, health, and mental health.
User Choice and Control: The pilot provides users with granular control via a dedicated settings interface, allowing them to dismiss ads, share feedback, and delete ad data with a single tap. A new “Ads History” feature also enables users to review previously seen brands and manage their personalization preferences at any time.
As the program evolves, OpenAI is exploring new formats to make conversational ads more relevant and useful for natural decision-making processes. Organizations interested in the new markets can now apply to participate through OpenAI’s dedicated advertiser portal.
