Microsoft and OpenAI have reached a significant milestone in their ongoing partnership with the announcement that GPT-5.6 is now the preferred model for Microsoft 365 Copilot. This update integrates OpenAI’s latest flagship model series directly into the essential productivity tools used by millions, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Chat, and Cowork. The transition aims to help users create, analyze, and collaborate with more capable AI assistance across their daily workstreams.
The primary advantage of GPT-5.6 is its ability to deliver more useful work from every token, providing stronger performance per dollar and on-demand capability for the most complex enterprise tasks. For professionals relying on Microsoft 365, this means producing higher-quality outputs with significantly less manual effort.

Specific application enhancements include:
- Word: Users can now draft, edit, and refine documents with fewer rounds of prompting.
- Excel: The model supports deeper data analysis and moves faster from raw data to insights through more efficient token usage.
- PowerPoint: Early ideas can be transformed into polished, visually compelling presentations with reduced manual guidance.
- Cowork: The integration streamlines complex, cross-functional work, producing high-quality results with less manual coordination.
Nitin Agrawal, President of Copilot & Agents Core at Microsoft, expressed excitement regarding the update, stating that it enables customers to “work even more effectively” in the tools they use every day. He highlighted that whether drafting documents or collaborating across teams, the goal is to provide a more polished and powerful AI experience.
Technically, Microsoft is accessing these models both natively and directly through the OpenAI API. Nikunj Handa, Head of API Product at OpenAI, noted that this approach helps organizations get more value from the AI tools they already use. This integration reinforces a shared commitment between the two companies to bring the benefits of advanced AI to individuals and organizations globally.
