International leaders from government and industry have launched the AI for Good Global Commission to ensure artificial intelligence serves as a tool for global equity. Global Leaders Converge to Launch AI for Good Global Commission

In a landmark move to shape the future of technology, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, Salesforce Chair and CEO Marc Benioff, and ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin announced the launch of the AI for Good Global Commission on July 2, 2026. This high-level initiative brings together more than 40 founding members, including heads of state, industry titans, and UN agency leaders, to define practical pathways for unlocking AI’s potential to solve real-world challenges.

Bridging the Digital Divide: A central mission of the Commission is to address the stark reality that 2.2 billion people—one-quarter of the world’s population—remain offline and cut off from AI advancements. The Commission seeks to ensure that AI becomes a tool for solving global challenges rather than deepening existing inequalities. President Kagame, serving as Co-Chair, emphasized that technology must be a “force for good,” calling for collective action to reduce inequality so all citizens can benefit from AI.

With 2.2 billion people still offline, the AI for Good Global Commission aims to prevent technology from deepening global inequalities.

A Foundation of Trust and Collaboration: The Commission occupies a unique space in the global landscape by connecting those who build and deploy technology with those who shape policy and represent diverse communities. Co-Chair Marc Benioff noted that the “promise of AI” is inherently tied to a “foundation of trust” necessary for shared success.

The initiative builds upon the success of the multi-stakeholder ITU/UNESCO Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, which previously shaped global priorities for digital inclusion and economic development.

Collective Leadership for Global Impact: Vice-Chair Doreen Bogdan-Martin highlighted the necessity of unified action, stating, “No organization can single-handedly put AI at the service of all humanity”. The Commission’s founding members represent a broad spectrum of influence, including leaders from Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Amazon, and various international organizations like UNESCO and the WTO.

The AI for Good Global Commission will hold its inaugural meeting during the AI for Good Global Summit 2026 in Geneva, scheduled for July 7-10. This event is a cornerstone of Digital Week, a series of digital cooperation events aimed at fostering global dialogue on AI governance and sustainable development.
