Social Media Helps Lady Gaga on the Forbes Celebrity List

Oprah Winfrey (No. 1) regains her No. 1 spot on Forbes’ 14th annual Celebrity 100 ranking of the world’s most powerful celebrities. Oprah is back on top after placing second for two consecutive years.

Lady Gaga (No. 2), with her massive social media presence, moved up from the fifth spot last year, followed by director Steven Spielberg (No. 3) and Beyoncé (No. 4). Madonna (No. 5) is a returnee to the list, rounding out the top five.

The Celebrity 100 measures money and fame, which includes estimated earnings over the last 12 months, and how often each celebrity is mentioned in print and on TV.

This year, Forbes worked with Starcount to measure social networking strength across 11 social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google+.

Also new this year is a marketability measure provided by E-Poll, a score that determines how desirable each celebrity is to marketers. Earnings consist of pre-tax income between June 1, 2012 and June 1, 2013. Management, agent and attorney fees are not deducted.

Musicians dominate the Top Ten in 2013. Country superstar Toby Keith (No. 43), featured on the cover (Cowboy Capitalist) has some of the most loyal fans in music, and owns enough product extensions to make sure they’re also some of the most lucrative.

Notable newcomers to the 2013 list include Hugh Jackman (No. 11); Channing Tatum (No. 23); Jennifer Lawrence (No. 49); Emma Stone (No. 84); Mila Kunis (No. 89) and Amy Poehler (No. 92).

Athletes Usain Bolt (No. 48); Drew Brees (No. 50) and Danica Patrick (No. 91) join fellow newcomers Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. (Erika) James (No. 42); model Miranda Kerr (No. 100) and TV host Sean Hannity (No. 72).

Among the drop-offs this year are Adele, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Johnny Depp, Alex Rodriguez, Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon and Elton John. The Forbes celebrity rankings were released today, June 26.
