Internet Meme Inspires the Grumpy Cat Art Project

Artists at Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment in Huntsville, Alabama have come together in “The Grumpy Cat Art Project” – a special project for the arts facility inspired by the Grumpy Cat internet meme.

Thirty-two of Lowe Mill’s artists volunteered their time and talents to the project with each providing an original interpretation of Grumpy Cat.

The original Grumpy Cat (whose real name is Tardar Sauce) rose to Internet fame after his photo was uploaded to social networking sites Facebook and Reddit.

The interpretations created by the artists at Lowe Mill range in media from paintings and jewelry to stained glass and ceramic sculpture.

Dustin Timbrook , one of Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment’s working artists, came up with the idea for “The Grumpy Cat Art Project” after seeing the mass appeal of the original Grumpy Cat meme.

“We really wanted to use this project to show how art can elevate even the silliest subject,” said Timbrook.  “The Grumpy Cat meme has incredible appeal to a huge audience – and now that audience can see how the talents at Lowe Mill were inspired by it.”

The entire “Grumpy Cat Art Project” is now available for viewing on LoweMill.net, the arts center’s website.

Many of the thirty-two original works will be available in an online auction starting on Monday, May 27, 2013 and ending with a public showing on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at the facility.
