On March 19, 2026, OpenAI announced its intent to acquire Astral, a move designed to integrate powerful open-source developer tools into the Codex ecosystem. Astral is the creator of several foundational Python tools, including uv for dependency management, Ruff for extremely fast linting and formatting, and ty for enforcing type safety. OpenAI has committed to a developer-first philosophy, stating that it plans to continue supporting Astral’s open-source products following the close of the transaction.

The acquisition is aimed at evolving Codex from an AI that simply generates code into a system that can participate in the entire software development lifecycle. OpenAI’s goal is to enable AI agents to plan changes, modify codebases, run tools, and verify results directly within the workflows developers already use. This expansion follows a period of massive growth for Codex, which has seen a fivefold increase in usage and reached over 2 million weekly active users since the start of the year.

Charlie Marsh, Founder and CEO of Astral, noted that joining OpenAI will allow the team to continue evolving their tools to “push the frontier of software development”. Thibault Sottiaux, the Codex Lead at OpenAI, added that bringing Astral’s expertise in-house will accelerate the vision of Codex as an agent capable of working across the full developer workflow. Python remains a central focus of this effort, as it powers critical infrastructure in AI, data science, and backend systems.

The closing of the acquisition is currently subject to regulatory approval and other customary conditions. Until the deal is finalized, OpenAI and Astral will remain separate and independent companies. Once the acquisition closes, the Astral team will join the Codex team at OpenAI to explore deeper integrations that help developers move faster while maintaining software reliability and performance.
