In a landmark move to propel India’s artificial intelligence sector, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has unveiled the company’s biggest investment in Asia to date: a staggering $17.5 billion commitment aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure, workforce skills, and national capabilities. This announcement came on the heels of Nadella’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring the tech giant’s confidence in India’s potential as a global AI powerhouse.
The fresh investment builds on Microsoft’s prior $3 billion pledge for cloud and AI development in Bengaluru, including new data centers and training programs. Combined, these efforts will total nearly $20 billion over the next four years, establishing what Microsoft describes as its “largest hyperscale presence” in the country. Nadella emphasized India’s “pivotal moment in its AI journey,” positioning the nation as an emerging “frontier AI nation” ready to drive inclusive growth and economic change through technology.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the initiative enthusiastically, noting on social media that he was “happy to see India being the place where Microsoft will make its largest-ever investment in Asia.” He added, “When it comes to AI, the world is optimistic about India!” and expressed optimism that the country’s young talent would harness this opportunity to innovate for global good.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Nadella shared: “Thank you, PM @narendramodi ji, for an inspiring conversation on India’s AI opportunity. To support the country’s ambitions, Microsoft is committing US$17.5B—our largest investment ever in Asia—to help build the infrastructure, skills, and sovereign capabilities needed for India’s AI-first future.”
This infusion of capital aligns with a broader trend of tech titans betting big on India. Google, for instance, recently outlined a $15 billion plan over five years for an AI hub in Visakhapatnam, in partnership with the Adani Group. Amazon has similarly poured billions into Indian data centers. The Indian government, under Modi’s leadership, is actively shaping AI policy, with recent discussions involving Qualcomm CEO Cristiano R. Amon focusing on innovation, skilling, and ethical AI frameworks.
