SAN FRANCISCO — January 7, 2026 — OpenAI has officially unveiled ChatGPT Health, a new, dedicated experience within its AI platform designed to help users securely manage and understand their personal health information. The tool aims to consolidate health data that is typically scattered across various apps, portals, and medical notes into a single, actionable interface.

A Personalized Health Hub

ChatGPT Health allows users to securely connect their medical records and wellness apps—including Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, and Function—directly to the AI. By grounding conversations in a user’s specific health data, the assistant can provide personalized insights, such as summarizing recent bloodwork, tracking cholesterol trends, or suggesting workout routines based on wearable data.

The service is also designed to help users navigate the complexities of the healthcare system, offering the ability to compare insurance options based on historical healthcare patterns and prepare specific questions for upcoming doctor appointments.

Developed with Clinical Expertise

OpenAI emphasized that ChatGPT Health was developed in close collaboration with over 260 physicians practicing in 60 countries. Over a two-year period, these experts provided feedback on model outputs more than 600,000 times to ensure the AI prioritizes safety and clear communication.

To maintain high quality, OpenAI created HealthBench, an assessment framework that evaluates the AI using physician-written rubrics rather than generic accuracy checks. However, the company is clear that the tool is intended to support, not replace, professional medical care; it is not designed for diagnosis or treatment.

Privacy and Security at the Core

Recognizing the sensitive nature of medical data, OpenAI has built Health as a dedicated, isolated space within ChatGPT. Key security features include:

  • Isolated Memory: Conversations and files in the Health space are stored separately from standard chats and do not flow back into the general AI experience.
  • No Model Training: OpenAI explicitly stated that conversations within ChatGPT Health are not used to train its foundation models.
  • Enhanced Encryption: The tool utilizes purpose-built encryption and isolation to keep sensitive health dialogues compartmentalized.
  • User Control: Users can view or delete their health memories at any time and must provide explicit permission to connect third-party apps.

Availability

Access is currently being rolled out to a small group of early users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. While medical record integration is currently limited to the U.S. through a partnership with the b.well network, OpenAI plans to expand access to all web and iOS users in the coming weeks, excluding those in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

You can think of ChatGPT Health as a highly organized, private medical concierge. While it isn’t the doctor who performs the surgery or writes the prescription, it is the assistant who has read every one of your files, summarized your lab results, and prepared a list of the most important questions for you to ask when you walk into the exam room.
